The Lexden Crown has a long and colourful history having been a beerhouse since 1851 with the original building dating back to the 1600’s.
An unexploded artillery shell sat unnoticed in the bar for six years and even that failed to deter the shy but persistent, ghost said to walk the bar on Saturday evenings.
Sports celebrities have been known to drop in for a pint at the pub and regulars have long enjoyed the beautiful garden and the award-winning floral displays.
Pubs used to thrive in the village of Lexden, part of the borough of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town.
In the 17th century no fewer than ten inns were recorded and some of them were long established even then. Five are known to have been in Lexden Street, reflecting its importance as part of the road to London.
The Crown at the west end of Lexden Street opened as beerhouses c. 1851.
Thanks to the efforts of Patrik and Jo Minder and their General Manager Shaun Pullum The Lexden Crown, born in the 1600’s now has a new lease of life and a bright future as a Bistro Pub.
